The Evolution of Job Demand in Renewable Energies and the Wage Gap with Oil

Hiring in Renewable Energies and Salaries

RG Principal states that hiring depends on the development phase of companies and the level of market development in a given country. Can the salaries of workers in the renewable sector be similar to those in the oil sector?

Interview with Gabriel Bussoli

In an interview for Energía Estratégica, Gabriel Bussoli, Director of Energy for Latin America at RG Principal, a company specialized in the global search for the best professionals for each position, discusses the characteristics of the renewable energy sector and the most in-demand positions at the moment, especially in the Colombian renewable energy market with the local leadership of Country Manager, Juliana Bustamante.

New Selection Method

He also previews the new method the company has developed for personnel selection, which is simpler and more effective than traditional mechanisms.

In-Demand Positions in Renewable Energies in Latin America

What are the most in-demand positions currently sought by renewable energy companies in Latin America?

It depends on the stage at which the company finds itself. If it’s opening operations or in the introduction phase, it would need positions like a Business Development Manager and Project Development Manager.

In the growth stage of the company, the most sought-after positions are Projects Manager, Project Finance, and Electrical Manager.

On the other hand, if the company is in a mature phase, they will be looking for a CEO, HR Manager, and an Accounting.

At RG Principal, we believe that in the medium term, the merging of profiles from the information technology sector with the electrical sector will create a demand for roles that do not currently exist, and we will have to develop these roles with the best talents from both worlds.

Most In-Demand Positions in Colombia

What are the most in-demand positions in Colombia, and could a ‘shortage’ of positions to fill occur as the market is in rapid development?

For the current business phase in Colombia, the most in-demand positions are Business Developers. Fortunately, there are profiles available to fill these positions.

The problem arises when companies are in a different stage in which they require technical positions, which are scarce in the market. In such cases, we would recommend incorporating talents from other sectors and providing training or, if necessary in the short term, hiring talent from another country to develop local talents.

New Selection System

What does the new system you have developed consist of, allowing companies to select personnel more easily and effectively?

Through our business consulting methodology combined with the RG Funnel, we can map the entire market, providing a broader perspective on the national and international markets, and most importantly, the relative evaluation of candidates. This allows for better hiring decisions that ultimately lead to better results for our clients’ businesses.

Employee Incentives

How should employees be incentivized?

With the pandemic, benefits have changed, especially the value of trust in a “home work” context, which has in some cases increased engagement and in others affected the organizational climate and team performance.

My advice to sector leaders is to review their team objectives under the “SMART” concept, provide the tools for the current work environment, and ensure that communication is more transparent and humane.

Attributes of a Good Area Manager

What attributes should a good area manager possess?

A good Area Manager leads by example, stays up to date with the market, and can enhance the qualities of their team.

We know that salaries in the oil sector are much higher than those in renewables. Under this context, do you think that over the years, this gap could narrow? Why and how?

Currently, renewable energy companies may not be able to offer such high salaries, but they can provide many benefits to their employees.

Considering that renewable energies are continually growing, many profiles from the oil and mining sectors are migrating because they believe they are contributing to environmental sustainability, regardless of the economic benefit.

For now, the gap is significant in Colombia, but as renewable businesses gain more volume, their hiring power will increase, and the gap will decrease.

In Chile, we have seen this effect, where the mining sector historically had the highest salaries, and today the renewable energy sector has surpassed it in some roles due to seven consecutive years of double-digit growth.
